TRAINING SCHEDULE
2010 Beginners Class starts Wednesday, 26 May 2010.
Duration of Beginners Class is eight (8) weeks.

PREAMBLE
Sydney Kendo Club has traditionally allowed beginners to join regular training sessions on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  This Beginners Program aims to deliver a 'training program package' to beginners the fundamental aspects of Kendo training.

OBJECTIVES
The Beginners Program is aim to achieve the following objectives:

  • Be familiar with etiquettes/ethical codes in Kendo (including attire);
  • Be familiar with the Ashisabaki;
  • Be familiar with the Ki-Ken-Tai no Ichi (気剣体の一致) concept.
  • Be familiar with the Suburi; and
  • Be familiar with basic Ippon-Uchi no waza and Kirikaeshi (切リ返し).

MATERIALS USED

GLOSSARY

Ashisabaki (足捌き):

Footwork.

Bokuto (木刀):

Wooden sword.

Hakama (袴):

Man's formal divided skirt.

Ippon-Uchi no Waza (一本打ちの技):

A single and direct strike using all one's force and spirit.

Keiko-gi (稽古着):

Training clothes.

Ki-Ken-Tai no Ichi (気剣体の一致):

Philosophy of connecting the power of body, sword and mind.

Kirikaeshi (切リ返し):

A practice exercise involving fundamental movements: Shomenuchi and Sayumenuchi.

Shinai (竹刀):

Bamboo-made sword.

Suburi (素振リ):

Basic cutting exercise combined with breathing.
