Kendo grading system consists of ten Nihon Kendo Kata 「日本剣道形」合計10本: - Tachi-no-Kata 1-7 (太刀の形7本);
- Kodachi-no-Kata 1-3 (小太刀の形3本).
Bokutō:
Bokutō (木刀) or Bokken (木剣) will be used by both partners instead of Shinai (竹刀) for Kata practice.
Kata One through Seven are performed with both partners using Bokutō (katana-sized).
Kata Eight through Ten are performed with Teacher (Uchidachi 打太刀) using Bokutō and Student (Shidachi 仕太刀) using Kodachi
(小太刀) or shōtō (小刀),
Roles:
Teacher - Uchidachi (打太刀)
Student - Shidachi (仕太刀)
Uchidachi makes the first move in each Kata except Kata Six.
